Call of Duty: Vietnam. According to the latest rumors, this is what the next game will be titled The source goes on to state that the game is still on schedule to be released in the fall.
No one is sure when the official announcement about the next instalment of the popular video game series will come.
Current conditions involving the pandemic make it even murkier when trying to predict when Activision will be ready to make the official reveal.
Adding to the uncertainty is the unrest at the developers attached to the title. One developer had its founding partners leave their company, taking several other employees with them.
The information about the title of the new game comes from Jason Schreier, an industry insider who is moving from the gaming site Kotaku to work for Bloomberg.
In the past, his information about games has been accurate, which leads many to believe that CoD: Vietnam is the true title of the game.
One thing Schreier would not confirm is whether the new game will be considered Black Ops 5. There has been some speculation that the new developers working on the game would make it into a Black Ops game.
The first Call of Duty: Black Ops game was set in Vietnam. Some believe that this new game will be a reboot of that first one. Schreier explicitly addressed that rumor and stated that this game will not be a reboot.
Black Ops 4 was released in 2018 and has been criticized for its lack of a story campaign. It is presumed that if the new game is a Black Ops game, it will not repeat that mistake.
Traditionally, Activision announces Call of Duty games in April but, as Schreier stated, “nobody knows what’s going to happen in the coming months.”
Schreier also said that any delays to the project would likely be more related to the coronavirus lockdown than to the instability with the developers.
Originally, Raven and Sledgehammer were picked to work on the next game in the series. Raven, though has not released anything since 2010, and tensions were reportedly high between the two companies. Now that the Sledgehammer founders have left their company, Activision has brought Treyarch in to complete the game. Some have pointed to the fact that this title will be the first in the series to play on the new next-generation consoles as a reason why the developers may be having troubles working on them.
There have been additional rumors that the next Call of Duty game would be made free-to-play or possibly making a part of the game free-to-play.
The original Call of Duty game was released in 2003. It was set around the Normandy invasions on D-Day in 1944. Many of the hallmarks of the series were started in this first game which was made to be played on PCs.
Treyarch made their first CoD game in 2005 with Call of Duty 2: The Big Red One which is the fourth title in the series.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the first CoD game which was not set in World War II. Instead, the game put players into a fictitious war in the Middle East.
The first Black Ops title was released in 2010. Set in the Cold War and featuring battles in Vietnam, Cuba and Russia, it is one of the most successful video games of all time.

Sledgehammer was first brought into the fold to help with 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. They found success right off the bat with the game selling a record $775 million in it’s first five days after release.
