After months of fundraising, The Tank Museum has officially reached its monetary target to restore its M47 Patton. Thanks to the support of tank and history enthusiasts, the £50,000 required to get the Cold War-era tank running was raised, meaning it will be able to make its public debut at TANKFEST 2025.

The M47, an American medium tank, was the successor to the M46 Patton. Entering service in the early 1950s, it primarily saw action with the US Army and Marine Corps, with the US’ North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) allies also adopting the vehicle into their ranks.

Outside of its military service, which included deployments throughout the Suez Crisis and Six-Day War, among other conflicts, the M47 is known for being a favorite of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was assigned to one during his service with the Austrian military. The actor later purchased the tank he crewed.

The Tank Museum launched its online fundraiser for the M47’s restoration in June 2024, and in under a year was able to reach its £50,000 target, thanks to public supporters and generous private donations. Matthew Pyle, an engineer with experience in tank restorations, was chosen to bring the tank back to running order, with finishing touches now taking place.

“This remarkable achievement is a testament to the passion and commitment of our supporters,” said Chris Price, director of The Tank Museum. “We are deeply grateful – your generosity ensures that future generations can witness history in motion.”

Kevin Hygate, the museum’s membership and fundraising officer, added, “Acquired from the Italian Army in 1987, this Cold War-era tank has never been on public displace before. Its restoration will involve a full system overhaul, a new engine, and cosmetic enhancements, ensuring it becomes a standout addition to our running collection.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed,” he concluded. “Your valuable support helps us keep history alive.”
