Sequel to 1981 WW2 Submarine Movie ‘Das Boot’ Coming to TV

In 1981, Das Boot showcased the claustrophobia and danger of working on a submarine during World War II. The epic German film jumpstarted the careers of director Wolfgang Petersen and actor Juergen Prochnow. The production also included Herbert Groenemeyer, who would become a highly successful musician in Germany.

Sky TV and Bavaria Film announced that they are producing a German-language series of eight episodes that will pick up where the original film ended.

Scheduled for release in 2018, not much else is known about the project other than its 25 million euro budget. The director and cast have yet to be revealed.

Like Das Boot, the series will be based on the 1973 novel by Lothar-Günther Buchheim. Buchheim wrote about a fictional submarine, U-96, and its crew.

The original film was nominated for six Oscars.
