Normandy: 70th Anniversary D-Day events May-August 2014

800px-Beny-sur-Mer_CemeteryFrom May through August 2014, Normandy will remember the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. Although the region has commemorated the event for the past seven decades, this anniversary may be one of the last when Americans who were there on this fateful day, those who represent the “living memory,” will be present.

Beginning in May 2014, more than 60 events will take place throughout Normandy, including re-enactments, parades, fireworks, memorial services, and military antique sales.

Tinchebray (Orne – 61)

Historical exhibition of objects, pictures and documents from World War II (at the Maison du pays de Tinchebray). Also: exhibition of war materials and vehicles (at the Anciens locaux du Lycée l’Espérance).

Orglandes (Manche 50) – Manor of the Hougue Night show at the Hougue Manor near Orglandes dealing with the German Occupation period and the Normandy liberation. This show is also paying a special tribute to Pierre Devouassoud and Magloire Dorange, French resistants from Orglandes and executed by the German at Montebourg.

Utah Beach (Manche – 50)A 70-meter-lenght fresco dedicated to the 70th D-Day anniversary and made by schoolchildren from several countries is exposed on the beach.

Monday, June 2nd 2014

Utah Beach (Manche – 50)-  Inauguration of the Liberty Tree, bearing 70 testimonies from 70 Normandy landing witnesses.

Amfreville (Manche – 50)-
11:30 a.m. Ceremony at the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment monument.

Carentan (Manche – 50)-
02:00 p.m. Parachutists from the Round Canopy Parachuting Team jump from a Douglas C-47 over Le Holdy battery (depending on weather conditions).-
05:00 p.m Inauguration of the Monument Cole, then ceremony at the “Carré de Choux” (Saint-Côme road).
