When Crystal Dennis read last month that the remains of a World War II pilot, Capt. Walter Francis Duke of Leonardtown, might have been found 68 years later in the jungles of Burma, it struck a chord with her. “They are my heroes,” the Hughesville resident said of the Allied servicemen who fought in Burma. “That’s why I’m here.”
Dennis was born in Burma — which some call Myanmar now — when it was a British colony. She was just a small child when her family had to flee from town to town ahead of the invading Japanese during World War II.
“You can’t forget war. Even as a child, you can’t forget,” she said.
