Vimoutier Tiger – should it stay or should it go?

Over on HMVF – Historic Military Vehicle Forum a debate has started about if it’s best to have tanks as memorials on battlefields or should they be moved inside and restored? As one member of HMVF stated – “There are armour memorials all over NW Europe, on my tour around Bastogne I was tripping over Tank parts at the side of the road! When a vehicle was put on a plinth close to where it was knocked out and as such has context to it’s surroundings I would never suggest removing it”…

So should they stay and rot outside or removed and protected?

  1. Stay. The deaths of the young men who fought in the Second World War came from all sides. This isn’t a monument to glory but a reminder of our history. Lest we forget..

  2. I saw it years ago..It’s a wonderful place..It appear suddenly while you driving your car… The grass and fields are the best museum for it..

  3. My concern is they will all rot and deteriate over the coming years – does anyone know if there is a long term presevation plan for them all?

  4. Looking at the photo It seems not to be deteriorated at all.. I heard something about french people who care for it..And after all..it’s not so easy to deteriorate a Tiger ( Where came you from WHO? )

  5. Stay. Correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as I know this Tiger still stands at the spot where it stopped.
I’ve been there last year and it looks in very good condition. Restauration is fine, but put it back where it came from. They did the same with the Sherman in Wibrin, Belgium.

  6. That’s a good point David – remove and restore and then replace – makes pefect sense.
