HOBART’S war memorial cenotaph has been vandalised in an attack described by veterans groups as absolutely disgusting.
Police are investigating the vandalism that saw the monument on the Queen’s Domain sprayed with graffiti sometime last night or early this morning. All four sides of the obelisk’s base were sprayed with silver paint and spray cans were found at the scene this morning. Phil Pyke from the Australian Peacekeepers and Peacemakers Veterans Association said he was disgusted by the lack of respect shown by the vandals.
“I would like to remind the offenders that our youngest veterans are only 18 years old and currently overseas serving in Afghanistan and other parts of the world and are probably not much older than the people who committed this act,” he said. Police forensics officers were at the scene this morning gathering evidence and by midday a Hobart City Council cleaning crew was on-site to start removing the paint…
